There is no sure-fire way to do this, unfortunately. It seems to be the luck of the draw. Sometimes they'll wait as long as you communicate with them, but even there - if they know you are saving for a settlement, then they may want you to apply those funds to a payment and may expedite legal proceedings.

So it's a balancing act, but with that high of an amount they are more likely to aggressively pursue it than just wait for you to save for a settlement. Basically, the faster you can get those funds together, the better - say 6 months or so. Plus, keep in mind that the amount will go way up very fast - with compound interest and late charges and over the limit charges being applied until charge-off.
