Yes, there are good debt settlement companies who will help you to come out of debt. However, you can also settle the debt yourself by calling your creditors directly. When you register with a debt settlement company, you pay to the settlement company and the company puts the money in a separate account and negotiates with your creditors once you have enough funds in your account. In the meanwhile, there is a possibility that the creditor might sue you for the debt. However, if you negotiate with your creditors and pay them directly, you may avoid the legal suit.

If the debt Settlement company is deligent in handling your account, you should never be in the position to be sued. Why would a ceditor settle a debt directly with a consumer? If you are paying your accounts on time, why in the world would they want to settle. If you anticipate not being able to make the payments the most they will do is defer payments, which they charge for. If you are in collections you can certainly try, but the success rate and the amount of the settlement will most likely be less. A good Debt Settlement company does it every day, they know the process.

id have to say i would disagree and agree with you debt help. a debt settlement company cannot keep you from getting sued even the good ones i know this as a fact from personal experience. some creditors just dont settle and at that time it was citibank. Now they are getting better, but no settlement company can keep you from getting sued.
on the other hand, there is alot of controversy here on this forum about doing it yourself vs company. yourself does work, there are thousands that do it everyday and it is cheaper. i used a company for many reasons one of which you stated that they do it everyday they know better about what thier doing than i did.
so frankly i dont feel there is a better way in general, but from person to person it varies as to which is the better option neither being better than the other. for me it was better, but for some its a waste of money. everyone thinks differently.
