Credit Counseling - Fact or Fiction?

One person said they went to credit counseling got on a "plan" and this is what happened. Yes they made one payment per month to the counselor, bills were paid. Rates were negotiated for interest to be reduced etc etc. BUT ... they were forced to close ALL credit cards except 1 and it could not be over a 1k credit line. Also, they were not allowed to engage in any other credit while under the plan. Nothing. And, thy were placed on a VERY strict budget, had to account monthly for all expenditures other than 10% for misc spending .. and were forbidden by the credit counseling agency to engage in frivolous spending like movies, bowling and other recreational activities. Also, they were forced to reduce their 401 k contributions and were made to stop participating in the company stock purchase plan.
So, for all of those out there saying, yes go to a credit counselor get out of debt .. I have a few questions ...
First, have you yourself actually engaged in a 'plan' with a credit counselor?
Second, did they impose these stringent rules on you?
Third, how did you manage to live and have no life for 3 to 5 years?
Thanks for your input.

I am in credit counseling and here are the answers:
1-Yes I had to close out all credit cards...but I guess if you are in over your head what do you need credit for?
2-They did not tell me how to spend my additional money, they simply asked me questions about my expenses(like rent, food, utilities) vs how much I bring home(this was to come up with a payment that I could afford monthly.
3-I can still go to movies, bowling, ball games etc. They never told me that I could not, nor did they ask anything about what I did with my extra money. They came up with a resonable plan that should leave me a couple of hundred bucks every month for fun.

Thanks for the reply ... just a couple of other questions ... so when you had to close all your credit accounts ... how did they get reflected on your credit report? Negatives?
And how much credit did they let you keep? The reason you need credit can be for an emergency .. blown tire, death in the family, emergency root canal ...
just curious ...

It didn't reflect any more negatively on my credit report than it being delinquent. It simply states, Pays through debt consolidation company as agreed upon.
The company I went with, you can put whatever credit you want to on it, they do not pull your credit report and make you put everything on it. I put everything but one credit card on it. And I have not touched that credit card in over a year. Even when I really really wanted something.
