I have not paid on a Chase card in over 2 years. It is with a collection agency. I just received a letter from a law firm that wants to defend me against a lawsuit they say was filed against me by the collection agency, but I have not received a letter from the collection agency indicating they plan to sue me nor have I been served any lawsuit papers. Isn't this rather unusual?

Hi!
Welcome to the forums!

Yes, the situation does seem unreal. The first task is to find out whether or not any case has really been filed against you by the collection agency. Contact the collection agency to know about the status of the account. If they say that they have really filed a lawsuit against you, then visit the county court clerk office and check status of the case. If the court clerk confirms that a case has been registered against you, then you may work with the law firm. However, before deciding to work with the law firm, you should check the credentials of the firm.

Hardly unreal...in fact this is quite normal. Attorneys watch the court dockets and routinely send out postcards and advertisements.

Look up the case online....there is no reason to physically go to court.

And FYI...collection agencies do not sue.....only law firms acting as collectors can sue.
