You can get a free copy by going to freecreditreport.com. You are intitled to a free copy of each of the 3 main reports once a year.

Any settlement on these types of debts are to be done at your discretion and it would be best to have a written contract spelling out the terms and stating debt is either paid in full or settled in full. Please remember sol for credit reporting cannot be reset by paying your debt.
