Debt On Credit Report?
Date: Wed, 01/02/2008 - 19:43
I recently signed up for my first credit report, and I discovered a debt from August 2005. The balance the credit report lists is around $200. They list a collection agency. What should I do? I THINK this may be related to a medical problem I had in '05 (since I can't think of anything else it'd be), but I'm not sure what my course of action should be. I was approved for a car lease in 2007 and an apartment, so I was not aware of any problem. My questions are: since the credit report shows a balance of $200, is that all I'll have to pay? And should I try to find out how to get ahold of the collection agency since I don't know what the debt is from? And if I do call them, what do I say? Can I get in trouble? Thanks so much for any help you can give.
Yes, I would try to find out who the CA is and get a mailing add
Yes, I would try to find out who the CA is and get a mailing address for them. Start by sending them a Debit validation request. (There are examples in the Do it yourself link above). If they provide the proof they indeed own the account and it is yours then make arrangements to pay it off. If they do not provide anything then dispute the entry with the credit bureau and ask that it be removed. It will be better to act on this now rather then letting it sit on you report.
I????????m sure someone with more experience will be along soon.
Good Luck

Do as mommontoya says, do not pay them a dime until and unless they validate the debt.
Take care
