I received a call at my house from First Source about a debt my mother supposedly owes. Even though I handle all of her finances now, they told me they could not disclose any information to me unless I had Power of Attorney or they received "verbal" authorization from my mother to talk to me. Is that true?

Hello,

Yes, the information they are providing you is indeed true. Creditors and collection agencies are prohibited from disclosing information to anyone other than the debtor unless they have authorization to do so.

If it's possible, ask your mom to get on a 3-way call with you and the collector so that she may provide you with authorization to discuss her delinquent account. This phone call should only take approximately three minutes or so, and then it won't be necessary for her to speak with them again.

Wishing you the best!
