PDL Scam

A nationwide warning was issued this week by the Better Business Bureau warning about the con, which tricks consumers because they are presented with personal and financial information, such as your:
Social Security number
Bank-account number
Address
Friend's names
The scammers accuse the victim of defaulting on a payday loan and claim he or she is being sued. The phony debt collector threatens that if the victim doesn't pay as much as $1,000 immediately via wire or by providing bank account or credit card numbers, he or she will be arrested.
What to Do
If you receive a suspicious telephone call regarding an outstanding debt:
Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation that proves the debt
Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card, or other personal information over the phone until you have verified the caller is legitimate
Beware of callers claiming to be from firms such as: "Financial Accountability Association" and the "Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans"
Report suspicious calls to the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov or

And from the posts appearing on this site, it seems that the problem is becoming more and more common, unfortunately. As to how the scammers are getting information, I don't think they're necessarily working from stolen lists; possibly they're paying for the lists? Just a thought.

I just received a phone call from these same people. I have to tell ya - it scared me. They are/were threatening to contact my employer and have my e-mail shut down. I did not confirm anything ... especially my social. I'm not sure what to do. I actually told them I'd get back to them by Friday, but I, of course, will not. I think I know which lender they've bought my info from, based on the amount they are trying to extort from me. These people need to be stopped.

And the computer - called a predictive dialer - looks at whether they successfully called you and how long those calls lasted to determine whether to keep calling you or move on to the next victim.
And to Paul's defense, these guys are in India. Innovations Infocom located in Ahderabad, Gujarat State, India to be precise. If saying so makes me a racist, then fit me for my white sheet because these guys need to be stopped.
