A local Emergency Consultant company in Florida (Billing agent for local hospital?) sent my bill to a collection agency without notifying me I was delinquent on charges. The Debt Collector called me, I paid the bill and I received a copy of the letter the Debt Collection agency sent the Emergency Consulting Agency showing the account XXXXXX was paid in full for the amount of $20.60.
I want to clarify the problem isn't the Debt Collection agency but the Emergency Consulting Agency(original creditor) that is now sending me a new bill on the same account for the $20.60 I just paid the Debt Collector and adding $140 they say I still owe . Adding insult to injury they show this debt 90 days overdue so this will probably go back to another debt collection.
If they sent the bill to the debt collector and I paid in full as shown in writing, can the Emergency Consultant Company come back and re-bill me on the same original account/bill and now add new/additional charges? I thought was illegal to send a bill to a debt collector then go back and re-bill again??? I'm going to send them a copy of the letter and tell them I'm not paying the new balance since the account was already paid in full. What legal statute/legislation can I use against this continued extortion?? Thank you in advance for any answers.

Your original creditor won't be able to come after you in order to claim the debt once again. You can send them a copy of the letter that the Debt Collection Agency sent you when you had paid off the debt. I hope this will sort out the matter. In case, the issue is not resolved, then you should take legal help in this matter and the lawyer will let you know what actions you can take against your original creditor.

well the issue may be with the collector.as just because they gave you a letter doesn't mean they gave the 20.60 to the creditor.in fact there are examples on this site of bottomfeeders using medical bills as part of their scam.even with medical debt you should DV whoever is collecting.you have to send a copy of the PIF letter you have to the creditor first.then contact whoever got the 20.60 and have them fix the mess.btw i noticed you are in FL.scam collectors paradise.emergency rooms, and hospitals bill on thier own.i have a feeling you got scammed, and they are looking for more.to close send this creditor a copy of the PIF with a C&D section.send it certified mail return receipt.

I now have both the "paid in full statement" I am sending to the creditor via certified mail and a copy of the bill that was sent to the collection agency. It was bounced back and forth between the creditor and my insurance companies. There is a charge of $20.60 I suspect was supposed to be paid by me and would have been if they sent that to me or at least called me before sending this to a collection agency. My credit is still ruined for 7 years but I hope this issue is resolved.

Thank you both for your responses
