Welcome to the forums!
It sounds like you realize you've made some mistakes in the past, and you have a goal in mind - great! That's half the battle right there - realizing that although mistakes have been made, you know you can straighten things out by making a solid plan.
If you signed up for the free counseling session when you registered here, you will be getting a phone call from a consultant who will discuss your options for debt consolidation or settlement. Please don't feel obligated to use their particular program - you are free to use any debt consolidation/settlement agency you wish, or you could start working on improving your situation yourself.
Since you mentioned that you have a hard time when it comes to money decisions, you might want to sit down and talk to someone at your bank - ask if they have someone who can coach you a little in the financial area. Another idea is to talk to a pastor, if you attend church - many churches have begun requiring that their pastors have training in financial matters, as their church members come to them for counseling on all sorts of matters - not just ones pertaining to faith.
Another good idea is to pull a current copy of your credit report from annualcreditreport.com. It's free - no strings attached - you're entitled to one free report once per year, or when you've been denied credit. That website will get you a report from all three credit bureaus.
Come back and keep us posted on your progress! :D
