Good morning, I've visited this site many times in the past few years and learned a lot so I'm turning to the experts for advice!

On Friday afternoon I checked my checking account balance online (I bank with Bank of America) and noticed that last $12.07 (I'm a grad student!) had been wiped out, as had the $1 and change I had in savings. I had an anxiety attack, of course, but managed to wait until the next morning to check again as I know the account would update with info over night. On Saturday morning it said "Legal Order - LTS" next to the transaction. I got on chat with a representative and all they could offer me was the phone number associated with the "warrant of levy." The area code for the number was in the state where I used to live - New Mexico. I called it, twice, and it only rang. No voicemail pick-up or anything.

My next step was to check the court sites. First New Mexico, since I lived there until last year when I moved for grad school. I went to the court site (all jurisdictions are in one place) and looked myself up to see if there was a summary judgement or at least a lawsuit filed against me. No. Then I checked the county court site where I currently live to see if anything had been filed here. Again, no. And I haven't been served, either.

This morning I called the bank and the representative was able to give me the dollar amount - $633.88 - and verify the phone number associated with it. I called the number again and same thing - it only rings.

I have old payday loans (from 2007) that I resolved through the help of this forum; all of them were illegal. Could this be a ghost from the past? I'm particularly suspicious because there's nothing on the court site. In full disclosure, I do owe NM state income taxes. HOWEVER, they put a lien on my credit report 4 years ago AND what I owe is about twice the amount of the levy.

In December I had to close my checking account and open a new one because of suspicious activity on the account. In the past few months at home and at work, I've received recorded messages from unidentified callers, often with a heavy accent, warning me to "call immediately to prevent the issue from escalating." If I call is identified, I Google the number and find out it's a phishing scam (this has been true multiple times).

Do I have reason to be concerned about identity theft or fraud? Should I used the student legal services office offered at my university for help?
