i fell behind on 7 credit cards, 2 have gone into collection so far, am behind on all (total is $48K). considering debt settlement, but 3 years seems a long time for card cos. to wait. am worried about them filing suit. HELP

Have you called them to see if they will work with you on a repayment program? That might be a start. That at least shows them you are trying to make an effort to get your debt taken care of and like was said above, continue to send them something.
