I had a business account with Advanta that was over $22,000. My last timely payment to them was December '07. They have very aggressive collectors, and started the constant calls a few months later. They even called my elderly parents and badgered them. I stopped answering the phone (caller ID comes in handy!) and started to get the letters about referring me to the litigation department, etc. I had entered a Settlement Program in February, but Advanta won't work with settlement companies; they will eventually offer you settlements directly if they truly believe they can't scare you into becoming current. Finally, in September, I was offered a 10% settlement, and if I didn't take it I would be sued. I received this offer through regular mail, priority mail, and by email. The same week, sure enough, I received a summons by priority mail. Needless to say, I took the offer. I had to do it outside of my settlement program, and was lucky enough to find someone willing to help me out with a loan. Advanta then nullified the summons. The amount had to be paid in two installments, three weeks apart, and they wouldn't budge on that. It was hard to pull it together, but the alternative was worse! I am grateful to them, in the end, for the great offer I got, but it took nine months.
