I would call them and see if they offer any programs to help you get caught up. Sometimes they will defer the payments or split the past due amounts over several months. This will bring you current.
A default notice is an official notice that you have broken your promissory note which gives the lenders additional rights to take action against you if you continue to default. I believe the next step is that they would move to foreclose on the house.
Please take proactive steps to get current with your lender. If you call and no one can help you, ask to speak with a supervisor or a loss mitigation department.
Good luck!

If you have had a loss of income, or something else that might qualify as a hardship, you could ask your lender (probably the loss mitigation department) about a hardship program also.
I was able to get put on a hardship program with my mortgage company. It lasts for three years, they gave me a slightly lower interest rate, and I'm paying interest only for those three years. It is saving me almost $600 per month. At the end of the three years, my loan reverts to it previous terms and gets reamortized for the remaining life of the loan. At that point, my payment will be about $100 per month more than it previously was.
Good luck!

I know times are tough right now so this might be an income issue but if you are going to default on anything make it the stupid credit cards. You should always pay your mortgage first before anything else. Then pay your utilities and cheap food. After that worry about all the extras.

your mortgage is the biggest thing that affects your credit, keeping it current will go a long way towards your future credit health.
Good luck!

Guest, if you don't pay your mortgage, you will lose your home and any equity in it. Rents now these days tend to be almost as much as a mortgage. Where would you live if you lose your home? And if you are foreclosed on, it will be difficult to purchase another home anytime soon.
The other bills, well, if you are behind, usually the creditors will work with you. It's a matter of prioritizing. Again, just not wise to not pay your mortgage.
(I'm almost tempted to believe that your post is bogus, otherwise you would've signed in!)

Unfortunately there are a lot of people that think like our guest. It is backwards logic to look at your mortgage payment and say oh gee I could pay 20 credit card bills with that amount of money and then they won't call me for another month. There is however a breaking point. If a person can't afford their house payment to the point of not being able to pay other necesities then the only option is to move down in house either by choice or by force. I thought the post was bogus too but I do know a lot of people think like that.

My mortgage was due on the 1st of Feb and I thought I would be able to pay by the end of this month. Unfotunatley, loss of OT and my car breaking down has put me behind and I will not be able to pay Feb's mortgage until March 17th. I havent told them yet. What should I say? Will they be able to help me with any other options? Will I goe into default for being 44 days late??

Just call the mortgage company, be honest and speak from the heart and there might be some sort of program they have. In the future remember that your mortgage must ALWAYS be #1 priority, you can live without phone and power, you can walk or take the bus, you can eat beans and weenies ... but you HAVE to have somewhere to sleep. Good luck.
