What can I do when I can't afford the $600 per month interest on $1,200 in payday loans? I would get a better deal from the mafia.

First, you need to take control of your finances. The easiest way most of us here have found to do this is to close your checking account. Second, you need to figure out which companies you are dealing with are storefront and which loans were gotten over the internet. The storefront loans are probably operating legally, and you will need to call and set up payment arrangements with them. They will probably tell you the best they can do is 1/3 of amount over the next 3 pay periods. Tell them you would like to pay this off as quickly as possible, but tell them what you can realistically afford. They will usually work with you.

As for the internet payday loans, many of these are not even legal. To see if they are, do a google search under pollyandsay's blog, go to corporate search, click on your state and type the names of the companies in here. If they are legal, license information, etc., will be brought up. If they are not, nothing will show up. If they are legal, you will need to contact them the same as the storefronts. You can check here to make sure the companies are following your state's laws: Search under state information.

If they are not licensed and are operating illegally, you will only need to pay them back the principal, minus the fees and interest you have already paid them. Don't let them bully you. They will threaten you with everything up to and including arresting you at your job. They cannot do this, and it's illegal for them to tell you this.

In dealing with internet PDLs, I found the PDL template letter on Pollyandsay's blog very helpful.

Also, it's very important to contact your Attorney General's office with any of the PDLs that are operating illegally. Many states already have files on these companies and can help you.

I know this is a lot to throw at you all at once. If you need help, let us know. Good luck.
