i have 40K in credit cards, all of them an average of about 18%. i'm avoiding the settlement route because i'm paying a lot more than the minimums; just going to take me a long time! any suggestions other than credit counseling? thank you.

I would consider a debt management Plan with a 501(c) 3 Non profit credit counseling company. It will get you one low payment with lower apr's " around 6%-9%". You are correct for not wanting to go with the debt settlement route since you can afford the minimum payments and are just getting killed with high interest rates. Debt settlement is for people who are overextended and can`t afford a dmp.

There are a lot of good ones out there. I suggest you check any company out with the BBB and make sure they have a solid track record. Also make sure they are a 501(c) 3 Non profit Company and ISO Certified. In order for a credit counseling company to receive benefits such as reduced interest rates, waiving late fees, etc from the creditors, the agency must have its 501(c) 3 Non profit business license . Typically if a company does not have this license, they are unable to receive the benefits for their clients. A few good names of companies that pop in my head are Consumer Credit Management Services Inc. , DebtWave Credit Counseling Inc and GreenPath, Inc.. These are just a handful of many good ones out there but this should be a good starting point to help you begin your search. Good Luck :)
