Trying to call the creditors for settlement
Date: Mon, 09/10/2007 - 18:01
My 1st question is: Is asking for a settlement and paying my bill off right away better or worse then going into a dmp.
My 2nd question is: If I do go the way of settlement, what % of what I owe should I seek to pay. 40%? 60%? and where do I start? The lowest bill first so I can start getting them cleared up or my save for a while and work on my larger ones.
Thanks for your help.
PS. just curious, but how do i redeem my points for $

You should read the thread DIY and see what kind of information you can get from there. :o Since I assume you are a registered user you should be getting a telephone call or email for a free debt consultation that will put in touch with someone that will work with you.
Other people will be along shortly to reply to your thread with some ideas of what you should do. 8)

Thanks ladybug. When I first signed up somebody did call me but I was just trying to get information on PDL's at the time so I told them I wasn't interested. Also, since most of my debts are in collecion I am not actually sure who I owe what to anymore. It really is sad when I start to think about it. 3 years ago I built my own house and now I am living with family and don't know who I owe money too. pathetic

You can always call them back and say you changed your mind and would like information now on debt settlement. If you want to do it one your own, the best to do is call them and see what they are willing to settle for. Before you call them know how much you are willing to pay. I have called before and haggled with them until I got a number that I could pay. Usually they will work with you as long as you are reasonable about the amount that you are willing to pay. I have even made payments on a settlement. I had a Capital One credit card that I owed $2000 on, I settled for $850, by paying $284 immediately and then $283 over the next 2 months. Research and settle the ones that are quicker to sue first. Just make sure you keep it affordable for you.
