Debt Verification

I have asked MCM several times for verification of a debt that I am pretty sure I paid off. I asked them if they were affiliates of another credit management group in which, just a month before, I had paid the same debt at the same exact amount. They said they had no affiliation and that they would NOT be sending me any verification until the debt was paid. They required me to put $500 down on my debt and they said once it was paid off, they would send me the necessary information. On one hand, I don't want to ruin my credit any more than it has been, and on the other hand, I don't want to be repaying $1700 and not be able to get it back. I'm not sure what I should do.

Did you do your request in writing via cmrrr? Under the FDCPA they will not be able to make any collection attempts until they validate the account.
It is already a collection account...it cant get any worse.
