I have a $1900 medical bill in collections because I missed two monthly payments with a local hospital (I was going through a rough patch and was out of work and money). I'm a college student with a part time job and the collection agency refuses to work with me on a payment plan and says the bill will be defaulted if it's not paid off by the end of February. I simply can't afford to pay the bill in full. Should I make monthly payments even though they're going to put it on my credit? I'm so confused on how all of this works. Advice?

You can talk to the accounts department of the hospital authority. Explain your financial condition to them. They may agree to forgive a portion of the total bill amount. Request them to withdraw the account from the collection agencies and work out an alternative repayment plan with them. Once the plan is approved, start making payments to the hospital. In addition, I would also like to say that you should go through the bill once. Check whether or not the bill amount is correct. If there is any error, inform it to the hospital authority. If the hospital authority refuse to co-operate with you, then I would suggest you to get professional help. You can enroll in the various debt relief programs and pay off the medical bills easily.

You can also get help of state assistance programs, social organizations to deal with the medical bill.
