I am slowly getting myself out of the payday loan mess and also paying off one of my credit cards in full by Sept/October of this year. When I pay off my credit card, this will free up $200 a month to pay towards other bills. The rest of my cc debt is manageable, only 3K. Miraculously, after the debacle of having 13 payday loans out, between my fiance and my 10 credit card accounts, and 1 store card, we are now only delinquent on 3 accounts, and two of those I've been able to make some progress this month! I had posted this query a different way, but hadn't received a response. But I'd like to start to take care of my medical bills, so they aren't continuously reported negative on my credit. It amounts up to 5k, and I am more interested in doing a settlement rather than a consolidation. My fiance is going back to school soon, and I don't want to have to worry about defaulting on a consolidation plan that has over two years on it...a little too risky.
Has anyone tried to do a settlement for their medical bills before by themselves or through a company and how successful was it? Also, if I do a settlement, are they always paid out in one lump sum rather than installment payments? I am assuming they expect the lump sum immediately after they accept the proposal.

I also forgot to add that my medical bills have been in collections for about 3 years. I don't get any calls or notices from the collection agency anymore, but I know they are still with the same CA since they are reported these as delinquent.
