I have three credit cards outstanding ... and medical bills that insurance didn't pay all of. And an auto loan that I have gotten letters from threatening to take me to court... I don't know where to start.

Since you signed up you should be getting a call from one of the debt counselors here on the board and they can review your situation with you to help. But in the meantime, you should gather all your bills, list them in the priority of needed to be paid, i.e. rent, food, car, etc. Make sure your needs are being paid first. And call your auto loan company, explain your situation and see if you can get an extension, sometimes they will let you miss a month or two and add it to the end of the loan.

Next - review your budget and see if you have any funds left after your food, rent, car, etc. If you do decide how much can be paid to the accounts who want to take you to court.

Call these accounts and see if they will work out a plan with you, usually they will settle your account for less, perhaps you can get them to settle for 50% of your total and make monthly payments of $100 etc.

GET everything in writing! And read the Do it yourself section on this forum.

The debt counselor will be able to review your accounts with you but not sure if they can help with the ones that are trying to take you to court, but you can work these yourself.

It will take some time, so I would take a deep breath, read the forums and then start gathering your stuff and make your to do list to start getting this stuff cleared up.

Good luck

Give first priority to the auto loan company since your car is at risk. You need to set up something with them before they repossess your car. Make sure that you have finalized the arrangement in writing so that you have a proof. It will be better to send all the correspondences through certified mail with return receipt requested.
