Hello all,

I served in the Iraq war years ago and left with what I thought to be only PTSD. SInce then I've been diagnosed with Biopolar disorder also. Uncontrolled spending is just one of then symptomsn of Bipolar and I spent 40,000. I kept lying to the bank saying that I had a job so they'd give me more. Now I have myself in debt and wondering if there is away out of this mess. I'm willing to declare myself imcomputant and have my wife handle my funds. Any help will be much appreciated.

I don't know of such a defense to use in a debt situation. Honestly, I really think that the only option would be filing bankruptcy. If you cannot pay the bills, then there is not much else to do. I would get a free consultation with a local lawyer, and give him/her all of the details. I have never heard of anyone having their debts discharged due to mental illness.

My daughter is bipolar and we had to declare bankruptcy for her. I handle all her finances and her paycheck is direct deposited into an account that she does not have access to until my death. It was a drastic step, but she spent every nickel she got her hands on. She even passed bad checks at the supermarket and I had to write a letter, explaining her illness and promise to pay back a certain amount each month in order to keep her from having a criminal record.

Hopefully you are on meds. Let your wife handle all financials.
