I am over 70,000.00 in debt but I have not made one late payment in over 14 years. I pretty much pay the monthly payment but reuse that money each month. I live in Mississippi and have had a terrible time finding a job. This is has brought me to the end of the line with this debt and I cannot maintain the payments in this manner.

I have been consulting with debt settlement companies, consolidation and management companies but I am so confused! I almost got sucked into Credit Solutions but, fortunately, the representative got a little rude after I took too long to decide, so I avoided that disaster.

After consulting with a settlement company, I did not pay my bills for the first time this month and it feels awful. I really don't want to go that route. I have worked so hard to maintain good credit and feel I should pay what I owe.

I also tried to talk to one of my creditors and they were totally rude. It's so frustrating that they won't help someone who has payed on time for the entire history of the account - one reason I didn't pay this month. Maybe being delinquent, I can get some assistance.

Does anyone have any suggestions or the name of some credible companies that I can work with? Or other suggestions for help before my credit takes a nose dive?

If you want to save your credit then yes miss one or two payments, they will work with you and maybe get you in a hardship program until things get better. That is a lot of debt and you could spend a lifetime paying it off. Your credit will take a hit with settlement, but you can get out from under and start over. Big companies blow off millions without even thinking twice about it and banks will turn around and give them more money when they want it, why should we feel bad if we have financial difficulties and can't pay our debt, it happens all the time and banks expect it. Bottom line is you have to do what you feel is best for you.

I see this is an old post, so hopefully you have figured out what to do by now. However, for people who face this situation, know you are not alone and there are things you can do. First, if you can't afford to pay your mortgage and other living expenses, don't even think about trying to pay your credit card debt. You must take care of you first.

Secondly, don't let debt rule your world. In other words, make sure you devote only a portion of your day to handling overwhelming debt. Pick a time and place that you know you will devote to helping yourself get out of debt, but make that your only time to think about it or work on it. Too many people let it take over their lives and then they find that it destroys everything. Keep it in perspective and treat it as just another challenge that you can overcome. It's not the end of your life and it's so important you realize this.

Work on positive things that will change your life. It is amazing what you can do when you give up your fears and follow your heart.

wishing you all the best
