Help! I am not getting any job in Woodland, California because of my debts

I have $35,000 in student loans. I have not paid any money on this loan for a few years. I'm looking for a job mainly in Woodland, California. Most employers are asking me about my debts. They're saying: "If you can't pay off your debts, then how will you perform your duties responsibly?". I'm confused. What should I do now?
