I want to start paying off all my old credit card debts but want to make sure the money is going to the right people. I've heard of people paying off some past due debts that don't seem to get paid off. What is the best way to find out who owns the account?

The details of the creditors will be mentioned along with their trade lines in your credit report. Then, call each creditor and request your latest balance status in writing. This will prove your account is with them and they are required to post payments towards your account. However, if the account is sent to the collection agency, then you need to get the debt validated in writing before working out any payment arrangements.

Welcome to the Community :D The best way to find out where you stand is, to pull all three credit reports. You can get a free credit report from all three bureaus once a year.

Once you look at your report, look for errors. Also look at your old debts, are they ready to fall off your report, are they past the SOL period?

If you can give us more info, like how old these are-when the last payment was made, when they became deliquent, etc., we can guide you in the right direction.

It takes some time and a little hard work, but you can clear these up and become debt free..!!..KAren
