i am trying to repair my credit , i recently was discharged from the military and have found no work. i want to know if settling or only paying a portion of the balance will hurt my credit any more than it is now, bills are 8 months past due

I would guess at eight months past due, your credit score has pretty much tanked. At this point, settling probably won't hurt you any more - in fact, by settling the accounts one by one, and stopping the accruing interest and fees, you will slowly begin to become debt-free. Once they are ALL settled, you will be able to start rebuilding your credit.
