Paying off credit card settlement for Dad through my checking account. Is this a bad move?

Make sure you negotiate a paid in full letter before making any payments. Can you pay by western union or with a cashiers check? I have done it in the past, and they typically do what they say like cashing it on the day they are suppose to. You will run into some sleaze balls who try to take out more than they are suppose to but, those are few and far in between.

Lesson #1 - NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR ACCOUNT INFO TO ANY COLLECTOR!!!

I would send a money order or cashier's check instead. That way your account is safe and there is no confusion over you or your dad being responsible if down the road this issue comes up. You will be surprised at the tactics that CA use. They may say that since you paid before, you are now responsible for any future amounts.

Since you are settling, I would suggest that you make sure that you get it in writing and that it says "Paid In Full" and that the difference cannot be sold off to anyone else (JDB or Attorney, etc.) Unless you get this in writing, you may end up hearing about this debt later on down the road. It may never die!!
