Same situation ,2005 i was told by a money mart comp, i had made a short loan from that l needed to pay the entire 130.00 to clear my bill because they were being taken over by a new company and needed to clear their books...Fine!, now they are harassing me saying that they represent the old billing company and l need to pay the money plus interest. l argued and they asked for proof of payment. l did not keep a small receipt for 6 yrs ago. Would it be prudent to dismiss this crazy contact ? My credit report shows that this is still on there

What state are you in? Check the Sol period on the debt. Ask the company to validate the debt. By the way did you really repay the bill? If not, then once the debt is validated, you can repay the bill. If you have repaid the bill, then you'll need to show them some form of receipt to prove that you have made the payment.

I guess it is going to be there in your credit report till the SOL is passed. If it's been 6 years and about to go past the SOL, then paying even a small portion of it is going to get your SOL clock reset. Have you requested a debt validation yet? This one might as well be a collection agency trying to pursue some junk debts that they purchased for pennies on the dollar.
