First step......and a little leery

OK, so I've finally reached that "painted myself in the corner" phase with my debt. I saw it coming and have tried really hard to get around it but.......here I am. I'm not really haviing trouble making the payments (which are over $1000 a month, its just that with all the different payments and interest, I feel like it would just make better sense to consolidate all of the debts (credit cards-$30,000 worth) into one monthly payment and pay the debt off in a specific shorter period of time. So, with all the companies and agencies out there saying they are there to help you through this situation, I can't help but be a little leery of anything or anyone saying they are there to help ME, so yeah I'm a little scared about doing this and am afraid of making the wrong decisions. All I want to do is pay off the cards, cut them up, and never get in that trap again. If I don't have the cash in hand at the time, then I go without. Thanks for reading
