There is a lot of information right here on this site. You can look through the posts under this topic. You can search for specific creditors by typing their name in the search box in the upper right corner. You can ask specific questions and the folks here will be happy to help you out with advice. There is also a "Do It Yourself" button at the top of the screen, just to the left of the search box, and that section contains lots of helpful information.

It really isn't that difficult to settle a debt. Basically you make an offer and they counter back and forth a few times with a bit of harrassment thrown in on their part to keep it spicey. Nascardevil wrote a great post about negotiating that you should read if you are going to try to settle your first debt with no experience. As long as you can put up with their bad behavior then you can settle on your own. Just keep in mind that it is nothing personal with collectors. They spew the same garbage to 100's of people a day so whatever names they call you it is just about them trying to aggrivate you. Other than that they could care less. Also keep in mind that they will try to make whatever debt you are talking about appear to be the most urgent item on the planet and make it sound like all of mankind will implode if you don't clear it up immediately which is never true. Time is always on your side. If you don't get the settlement you want then abruptly hang up and try back a week later.
