hi all

i have managed to get TERRIFIC hardship programs on 3 of my 4 credit cards.... so that i can probably actually pay them off. discover - .9% for five years, chase - 0% for five years, PNC - 4% for 5 years... bank of america will NOT do a hardship plan, will continue to charge me 29% interest AND won't settle for less than 50%.

any suggestions?

Hi. I settled with BofA in 2010 on a $40,000 balance. I settled for just over $8000. About 170 days from when I stopped paying, they offered me the settlement. I stayed in contact with them the entire time, explaining I was a hardship situation and just could not pay them any more. I answered every phone call that came in and was always polite regardless of how they were on the phone to me. Yes they did ask for financial specifics towards the end (why did I have reduced income, what were the amounts of my monthly bills, how much $ did I bring home net pay each month, etc). They never asked for copies of paystubs or other bills. Everything was just verbal over the phone. I think it helped that they could see on my credit report that I was also not paying other creditors, and they realized I truly was a hardship case. Believe me they will look into that. I know 20% is a VERY good deal, and I think it is still realistic for anyone. For me communication was key. I have one more credit card to settle on which is Citibank. Not sure what to expect but I hope I'll get 30% with them.
Good luck!

my balance is about 24,000 and it is supposed to charge off around the end of april. i just talked to them today and they won't go any lower than 50%. the guy i talked to told me to call back on the 18th. ???? i can't do 50%. i could do 30% if they gave me a couple of payments.

If he told you to call back on the 18th it sounds to me like he was telling you that that day you may be able get a better deal. If it were me I would call back on that day and speak to the same guy and tell him I was able to come up with a little more money but that I couldn't come up with the 50%. I would only come up from your last offer a little bit and NOT an exact percentage. For example if my last offer had been $6000 I might say I was able to come up with $6300. I can only answer based upon how we handled these types of situations in our settlements. Good luck.

I had the same problem. I had three credit cards, US Bank and Citicards was willing to drop interest rate for a 5 year payback. Bank of America was ridiculous and refused. I was told "It's not our problem how long it take you to pay your debt" when I stated I could not afford to pay it back over 38 years. I'm now 90 days deliquent. I've been told that they update your account once a month (you can call on the 10th) and see what your new offer it. If you cannot accept the offer, wait longer. Generally the closer you are to charge off (180 days) the better the deal.
