I opened a joint credit card with a former boyfriend years ago. I was entirely debt-free when I met him, and after 3 years, I accumulated around $30,000 debt in credit cards. I had him as an authorized user on most, but we opened a joint card for $10,000. Needless to say, when we broke up, I took him off of the cards so he can't charge, but the joint account I had to close because the bank would not agree to divide it in half. Although he verbally assured me that he will pay off half of the joint credit card (some day), it's been a few years and he hasn't paid a dime. The bank is saying that the only way to get him to pay is by legal judgment. I am a bit lost - I don't want to spend a ton of money on a lawyer but I really want him to pay the remainder of the balance (roughly equal to or less than the amount I have paid so far). I am not even attempting to make him pay for the debt he racked up as an authorized user but he ruined me financially and I want him to get a share of the repayment burden. I enrolled the card in a debt consolidation program about 8 months ago and don't know how a judgment will affect it ... Do you think I have a real chance of winning in a lawsuit? I could really use advice how to handle this. Thank you so much everyone!

It sounds like you could take him to small claims. You shouldn't need a lwayer for this. Because if you have proof that you have been making the payments, then he needs to prove that he has made payments (which he hasn't) so you should win. Take it to the Peoples Court lmao (just kidding  ) Plus you could probably get court cost also. You will have to check with the court to see what the dollar amount limits are for small claims first.
