where do you find the sample letters?

Hi,
I am new and have done a lot of research for debt settlement. I am going to go ahead and try to settle the debts my self with the creditors. I have read alot of to send sample letters. Where are the sample letters and I thought it was always better for them to contact you first. is this right? or do you send a letter first?
