My father is 81 years old and my stepmother passed 2 years ago. Dad has social security and a small annuity. He has no car or house or other assets. I have his power of attorney and am trying to find out what I can do about the debt they had accumulated. They had a line of credit for a bank of over 20,000 dollars, medical and ambulance bills as well as cell phone and cable bills a relative had run up using them as a co-signer. The total is about 30,000 and he is getting collection notices and I have no idea how he can ever pay these. What is my recourse here? Can they garnish his soc and annuity? Thanks for any response. D-

I think you would have a case against
Medicare if there were unpaid medical bills, assuming that he was on medicare! As 0311 stated, it would be beneficial to get an attorney. At his age bankruptcy would probably not really be detrimental but I would persue the Medicare route first! Please realize that I am not a professional and my opinion is only what I have perceived thru experience.
