Default Judgement

I have been dealing with a debt settlement company who negotiated a debt for me after I was served a summons to appear in court. The case did not go to court because the company was able to negotiate a settlement. The settlement was for 5 monthly payments then one lump payment, that I defaulted on because I could not raise the money in time for the payment.
The debt company then stated they would re-negotiate the debt. While I was waiting for them to settle the debt, I received a default judgement against me, even tho the case never went to court in the first place.
Can the law offices ask for a default judgement even if the case never made it to court?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
