9000+ dollars in debt, mostly low balances, wish to pay off several with impending income tax return. Stupidly signed up with a debt consolidation company, and didnt cancel soon enough, now they are trying to take money from my checking account.

Go, get the cancellation done in writing with your consolidation company. Anything they do in your account after the contract is canceled is illegal. They should not take out money from your account when you are not using their services and after the cancellation is done. Did you read the contract thoroughly?

Call your creditors and work out a payment plan with them. If it's done, you won't need any company to take care of your accounts. Who are your creditors? Maybe you can discuss about your situation here and get suggestions.

Welcome to the forum, RedHead! You can post your info. here. Chances are, someone on this forum has dealt with one or more of your creditors and can give you some pointers on dealing with them.

There are template letters on this forum that you can personalize and send to your creditors to work out settlement proposals and such.

As for the debt consolidation company you are dealing with, you could contact your bank and ask them to block all future debits from the consolidation company so they cannot withdraw anything further from your acct.

Thank you Tiffany.

I currently have cards with Capital One, WaMu, Chase, Target, Mervyns, Lowes, Gap, Old Navy, WalMart, Best Buy, Victoria's Secret and I think that's it, well, plus medical bills and student loans.

I just started settling with Best Buy tonight through a company who bought my debt, they've knocked $400 off my original debt, so to me, considering I did spend the money, that's fine.

Is the best way to ask for settlements in writing? Thank you for that info also.

Good to be around people who can help.

You need to contact each of these creditors by mail yourself. Some debt consolidation companies are really terrible at assisting the consumer and actually have been known to make matters worst (not sending the consumer's payments on time is one).

See if you can make arrangements with these companies yourself. I have found that with some of these companies, they are willing to work out arrangments and possibly settlements without any damage being done to your credit report. But the only way to find out is to contact them.
