I have about 7k in consumer credit card debt in the U.S.

I plan on moving to Ireland fairly soon here and have tried to work with my card company to either reduce the interest, the minimum payments, or accept a smaller amount, but they are unwilling to work with me to make this easier on myself. So, I am frankly factoring them more and more out of my future plans entirely.

I do plan on speaking to a lawyer about this, but just to ask a general audience as well, does anyone out there know if they could end up suing me in Ireland if I simply decide to shut the doors on them?

I think that the person who could probably answer this one would be Lawstudent or one of the attorneys that we have on the boards.
Realistically, my gut is that the company would have to decide if it was really worth going after you for that amount of money, which in the scheme of things is a fairly small amount of cc debt. You would also have to research the different agreements between Ireland and the US in this area.

In today's global economy, who knows? If the company does business in Ireland (and they probably do), they might be able to sue you in Ireland, but they must follow Irish law, I really don't know. But remember, the statute of limitations in most states would "freeze" during the time you are out of the country, and re-start whenever you return.
