How bad does debt settlement hit your credit score?

it will hurt your score, but not nearly as bad as a bankruptcy. if you work a settlement before the account charges off is better than after charge off then going to collections. credit report shows payments for last 36 months, but most creditors do post a notice of settlement, worded in different ways. some say paid as agreed 0 balance, settlement for less than balance 0 balance, etc.. but those statements are easier to get removed from cr - bankruptcy will not get removed for years.

It will have a big negative impact. It depends partially on how many you settle. I also defaulted on my home mortgage and HELOC, but my cs went from 720's to 580. I always tell people that if you can afford to pay off your bills, this is not for you. And if you cannot afford to do so, what does it matter?
