I am a receptionist at a law firm. I received a summons for a credit card debt which I was unable to pay because I lost my job and was unemployed for a year. I asked one of the attorneys I work with about this and he said there is nothing I can do because I owe the debt unless I could prove that the debt was not mine. He said the best I can do is offert to settle or make payment arangments. He said the judge would see my unemployment as an excuse not a defense. Is it worth it for me to purchase one of these self-help kits on line for $37? The guy is an attorney so I figure he knows what he's talking about. Please advise!!!

Why would you purchase anything? You can do it yourself. Can you share more details about your debt? (How much? Have you been contacted in the past by the creditor and or collection agencies? Any settlement offers ever received? etc.) I will PM skydivr. He's our resident expert on how to answer the summons and your best chance at winning in court.

hi--

Without knowing more details about your situation, it is impossible for me to offer any real advice at this moment. If you can provide some more details, we will have a better idea of what is happening and how to address it. I'm going to ask that you send me a PM with more information, if that's OK, because some debt collectors look on this forum and we dont want to give any information away. I will be busy tonight but I will definitely have the chance to review what you have and get back to you within the next day or two. Please get back to me, thanks.
