Takhar called me about a somewhat valid debt of $94 from an online book club that I joined like three years ago. I only didn't fulfill my obligation to buy and they quit corresponding as I forgot about it, and the $94 is for books I should have bought but didn't. So, make of that what you will. I really don't feel safe telling these people my debit card number or bank account info, and that would be pretty stupid at this point. They rang my phone many times with an automated message telling me to call them back without specifying why. So, out of sheer curiosity I did. They then thought great we got him and so let's hit him with his debt.

I told the woman I spoke to that by law they cannot ring my phone without saying they are a collection agency. She then began trying to harass me into paying, engaging me with subtle attempts to piss me off without directly making any statements. So, I told her I would contact the book company directly and she could forget about me putting dessert on her dining room table and hung up. If they had done things properly and not gotten rude, I would have still checked them out to make sure they were legit but I would have sent them a check or something. I don't ever give out my bank info when I am contacted, only when I am the one making contact. Even if a call is coming from a toll-free number, anyone can get an 800 number. Just like anyone can make a web site and collect payment info. So, you can never be too cautious.
