My mother has recently suffered a major illness forcing us children to get her qualified for medicade to cover nursing home expenses. She has no money to pay those bills and does not know how to negogiate with no money to negogiate with. Can you suggest anything? Bankrupcy is not an option because Medicaide does not allow any financial changes or she will be disqualified. We wrote letters to all the CC to write off the debt to no avail. What is her source of income? If it's only social security or a pension, they can't touch her.
If she owns a house, they can put a lien against it which would be satisfied upon sale of the house.
I suggest you write certified letters to the creditors, giving proof that she is unable to pay. My mother went into nursing home. Sears kept hounding us. We sent proof of nursing home residence, etc. and they wrote it off.
If they keep calling, get the phone number changed. Hopefully, the accounts are in her name only.

Thanks for responding. Yes Medicaire and a small pension is her only source of income. I have sent letters to all the credit card companies with proof of her situation. However they only responded with letters to make payment arrangements. We changed her phone number and are moving on to not pay the them. I feel much better with your reponse that they cannot do anything to her house.
