Can you just pay the original creditor instead of the collection agency?

In most cases, when you are "assigned" to a collection agency (third party collections) it is done so under contract between the CA and creditor. The creditor as a rule agrees not to get involved or interfere with the CA's collection activities unless there is just cause...ie fdcpa violation. Any payments sent directly to the creditor are still forwarded to the CA as a pay direct.
If the account is sold to a JDB, the OC no longer owns the account and cannot accept your payment.
