At first, you need to check whether or not the SOL period has expired in your state. If it has expired, then the CA has no right to take any legal action against you. Otherwise, the CA may get the right to take any legal steps against you. If the SOL period has not expired, then you can make a written request for a debt validation letter to the CA via certified mail with a return receipt request. If they don???t reply, then forward them a C&D letter. If they send you a proper debt validation letter, then you may negotiate with them and work out a better repayment plan.
