Not cooperating

I was having problems paying a debt of an old CC that had been closed in approx 2007. I had been paying regularly until I lost my job. I called and tried to work with them. I tried to change my info online as I moved and changed my Phone number. It would not accept it online. I called and tried to work with the company. They wanted all back payments before they would even talk to me... INCLUDING taking my correct info. The company was taken over by the Federal Government in the process of me being late. Everyone who had credit with that company had their accounts closed. I called in FEB of 2011 which was the first month I was late. I asked if I could get a 0% paydown but they told me I would have to be 60 days late first. So 60 days later I called back and tried again. That is when they told me they wouldn't even talk to me unless the account was current. They tried to charge me more than my statement reported as being due?? A bunch of crooked ppl!! I refused to pay it as I only had a certain amount in reserve to pay the account to current as that is what the statement read was due and not late for another 10 days at that. They just flat refused to work with me and told me they would turn me over to collections in 15 days. Well sad thing was I couldn't come up with the extra $200 they were demanding within 15 days as it took everything I had to come up with the $800 that was due to begin with. So I didn't pay it! They have never contacted me again. They have never called or mailed (in which they did have my correct address) me anything on this account except the final statement before they did a charge off. What should I expect from this account since they have never sent a statement or anything since July of 2011? Amount due 2/11 was $2000 but by 6/11 they had charged me $1000 interest on this account. By the time they charged it off 7/11 it had grown to $3700. TOTALLY RIDICULOUS!! I have always paid my bills and can't believe that this company refused to work with me. Esp that they raised the amount due compared to what was actually on the statement.
02/2011 balance was $2000 You asked for a paydown at 0 percent
02/2011 balance was $2000
You asked for a paydown at 0 percent interest. They said they wouldn't talk until it was 60 days past due. This is where things went sideways. You shouldn't have listened to them and insisted that you pay whatever you could then and carry over the balance to the next payment period. This 60 day play is what they trick people with.
$1000 added as interest on 06/2011
$700 added on 07/2011
This I believe is late fees plus some more accrued interest. Your best bet is to call whatever collection company holds the debt and negotiating a settlement with them (if if you have the ability to pay a lumpsum amount).
