Not to be mean, but if you are basically telling them that pretty soon you won't be able to make the payments, then why should they let you keep racking up new charges that you won't be able to pay for?

yeah, well, i didn't really lose my job, I just read some bad info online which stated that it was a tactic used to get a lower interest rate. Didn't work and I dont advise anyone to try it.

I see. Yeah, definitely some bad advice. If you want to keep using the card, you really can't give them reason to consider the account at risk for non-payment. Once they deem themselves insecure, they will close the account.
I had a credit card that I always paid on time, but in July 2008 I made the payment seriously 1 day late. Not only did I get hit with a $35 late fee, but they invoked the "default" APR from 8.99% to 32.99%. (Not that it really mattered, because I pay the account in full every month so they never actually charge interest..... )
A few weeks ago I called them and said "Look at my payment history, you'll see I pay in full every month, there was only 1 time I was late and only by a day; don't you think it's time to lower the APR back to what it was?" The rep said no, she couldn't do that.
So I called back, got a different guy, I explained the same thing, and told him if that's their final decision then I wanted to close the account because there's other banks that will give me a credit card at a lower rate. He put me on hold, and came back and said that his manager authorized him to lower the rate back to 8.99%.
I guess that's the bottom line is that if you're a good customer, they don't want you to go, and they will make concessions to keep you. But I was prepared to close the account if they didn't agree; after all, there are other credit cards out there.
