If a debt settlement with a lump sum is negotiated how long is it until your credit begins to improve?

I'm really not sure about this but I wanted to acknowledge your post so you didn't feel ignored, keep checking back for replies.

How far behind is the debt?? Paying or settling a collection account really does nothing to improve a credit score.
