If the credit report doesn't contain an account number (or lists it as "N/A" or "XXXX" what information should I provide to the collectors to reference my debt? SS#?

just your full name should be sufficient.if they are on your report they should have your ss#.never volunteer that info.in fact i would dispute it with the credit bureaus if it doesn't look familiar.what is the name of the creditor?

Medclear, Inc. The debt is for $22, apparently from a doctor's visit when i was in college a few years ago. If they sent any kind of paperwork on the charge, it was back then, and to my home address. My dad says he remembers their calling him and saying if he paid $40 of the total sixty-some dollar bill, they would forgive the rest of it. He did, and this just showed up in a report I ran last month, but not the report I ran in November. I'd be willing to pay $22 to have this go away, so would a pay for delete letter be my best course? Or should I try to have them validate it?

Thanks.

I will send them a DV letter, but my dad doesn't have any records of this bill or payment since it was a couple of years ago. Plus, the agreement he made with them to settle the bill for $40 instead of $60 was made over the phone, so I have no idea whether disputing the $20 balance would work. But in any case, I'll do a DV and see what I get back.

Actually - I should have mentioned, it does say $64 under "high credit" and the $22 is under "balance due" and "amount past due." In the interest of trying to get this settled as soon as possible, I think I'll go with a pay for delete, unless you think DV is still the more likely way to go about getting it removed. Should I need to send a pay for delete certified/return receipt?

do this since it does show it as balance due.offer to pay the 22.00,but you want the agreement in writing, and the proviso that they remove the entry upon payment.that is what i would do,but get it in writing first.nothing over the phone as you got burned the last time.
