He just this past Monday got called to a job that promises good employment and benefits. The agent wanted to know where he worked and details. I refused to tell him where the job site was. I told him they don't need that information, and he explained he just was trying to help me avoid a negative credit report. I continued to refuse and
he became slightly belligerent, and said they will move to the 'next step'.
I am stressed, and want this to stop. Do I have to tell them what they ask?

thanks, i can try in a month as there is no money right now, that's where they all came from-the shadows of unemployment for a year!

You do not have to tell them what they ask. According to Federal law, the only information a creditor should be asking over the phone are account details. Some creditors may ask you to send a pay check stub or a copy of your most recent tax return, but this is generally used to help them determine how much they can get from you. The best way to get relief in your situation would be to contact a debt counseling firm and talk to them about your options, whether you want to do debt settlement or debt consolidation. Signing up with a counseling firm also has the added benefit of stopping the harassing phone calls from your creditors as the FDCPA requires that they stop calling you after they have received a power of attorney from a counseling company.
