My mother had this happen to her. My Dad was disabled and rung up $25k in credit cards without her knowing it. she felt they never should have issued credit cards to someone making $750/mo in social security. When he passed away she was told by our lawyer she didn't have to pay them.
they called and called for a while but eventually quit. They even threatened her that they would call us kids to pay them. She said fine - call the oldest kid first, she's a lawyer. that was the end of the calls.
the only one that she paid was one that my Dad has used to buy a dishwasher or something because she felt she was benefiting from it so felt obligated to pay it, but the rest of them no way.
