if i settle a debt, how long will it take for it to come off my credit report?

Even if you settle the account, the negative would stay in your report for the entire tenure of 7 and 1/2 years, unless you're successful in negotiating 'pay for delete'.
However, once the account is paid and updated accordingly, its negative influence on your score would minimise.
